Teeth are not only essential for consuming food but also for talking. Moreover, teeth play an important role in our appearance and, therefore, in our social relations. However, you can often lose a tooth or more for various reasons.

When teeth are missing, dentures provide a great solution. Among the types of dentures available are the following.

Traditional Dentures

Depending on the level of your tooth loss, your dentist can suggest a full traditional denture or a traditional partial denture.

Complete dentures

Complete dentures, also called full dentures, replace full sets of teeth, covering the entire upper or lower jaw. The dentures rest on gums because there will be no natural teeth to anchor them to.

Partial dentures

A partial denture is for patients who still have some of their natural teeth, such as when one or more teeth remain in the upper and lower jaw. The base is pink and attached to a metal piece. The metal piece holds the denture in the mouth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

An implant-supported denture uses a dental implant to hold it. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots made of titanium posts embedded in the jawbone. Dentures attach to implants by a small connector called an abutment.

A dental implant forms a strong foundation for a denture, allowing it to stay securely in place. Candidates for dental implants, however, must have sufficient bone density to support the posts.

Immediate Dentures

After having your teeth extracted, you will need to wait a few weeks before you can get traditional dentures. Your mouth will have enough time to heal during this period.

On the other hand, you receive immediate dentures from the dentist at the same appointment they remove the teeth they're replacing. Before removing teeth, your dentist takes measurements of your smile, which they use to fabricate the denture in advance.

Even so, you will typically wear immediate dentures temporarily while you wait to get your permanent denture.

Snap-In Dentures

Snap-in dentures provide the best stability. The dentures feature locator attachments that snap onto anchor screws for easy attachment and removal. In addition, the dentures fasten securely, so you do not have to worry about them falling out.

A patient with snap-in dentures usually has some bone remaining that can support the anchor.

When considering types of dentures, evaluate all aspects carefully. Consider your particular needs and the results you expect in the long run. Consult your dentist to help you decide which type of denture is best for you and perform the procedure.
