The primary speciality of prosthodontists is the replacement as well as restoration of any missing or damaged teeth. As such, they are considered architects of your smile. When it comes to prosthodontic treatment, it is not exclusive to your teeth. They need to factor in other elements such as your facial features, your gums, your lips and more to ensure that you have a natural looking smile. Here are some of the different treatment options offered by prosthodontists.

Aesthetic reconstruction of your teeth

This refers to the process of providing you with either full or partial implantology treatment to edentulous patients. The term edentulous refers to a patient who may be missing one or multiple teeth. Aesthetic reconstruction not only restores functionality of your teeth through implants, but it also ensures that your jawbone now has stimulation to prevent it from slowly disintegrating at the gap. Although aesthetic reconstruction through implantology is one of the more expensive treatment options, it is permanent and provides you with the most natural looking alternative to tooth replacement. One thing to note though is that prosthodontists will advise smokers to either quit the habit before opting for this treatment or to seek an alternative method altogether. This is because dental implants have a higher tendency to fail with smokers than non-smokers do.

Bonded restoration of your teeth

Bonded restoration refers to cosmetic procedures used by prosthodontists to reshape and brighten your teeth. There are a number of reasons why one would require bonded restoration treatment. The most common is when your teeth acquire chips or cracks and need to be remedied before they affect the structural integrity of the teeth. A popular treatment option for this is through the use of veneers. You may also need bonded restoration in the event of badly stained teeth. Since cosmetic whitening may not work, the prosthodontist may opt to using a binding agent such as porcelain veneers to brighten your smile. Bonded treatment can also be used to remedy unevenness of the teeth due to wear and tear through grinding, trauma and more.

Crowns for your teeth

Another treatment option for damaged teeth is dental crowns. These are typically forged from porcelain, metal or a composite of both elements. Although crowns are prosthetic, they appear similar to your teeth, and hence provide a camouflaged treatment option. In addition, they can be manicured by the prosthodontist to appear the same shape and colour as your own specific dental formula.
